Here in Big Sky, we've got some pretty specific challenges that a lot of folks outside our valley just don't deal with. You can't just slap down flooring like you might in, say, a more temperate climate. Come summer, you might have windows open, letting in more humidity, or you're dealing with meltwater. This constant expansion and contraction, drying and re-humidifying, puts a real stress on flooring materials. Wood floors can cup or gap, and even tile can suffer if the subfloor isn't prepped correctly. I've seen it countless times, especially in those newer builds up in Moonlight Basin where the ground can really settle in the first few years.
Another thing? Our soil. It's not always the most stable. Depending on where you are – whether it's a home built on bedrock or one on more expansive clay soils – your foundation might experience some subtle shifts. For tile work, especially large format tiles, this can be a disaster if you don't use the right uncoupling membranes and flexible setting materials.
